The twin Melbourne and Sydney Buildings, dating from 1926, form the focal point of Canberra’s Civic Centre. The modified Mediterranean style of red-tiled roofs, stucco walls and simplified classical detailing reflects the influence of Sir John Sulman on the architecture of the national capital. The Commonwealth-owned western range of the Melbourne Building has been restored by the National Capital Development Commission.
