A set of four pre-stamped envelopes will be issued by Australia Post on 13 October 1987 in conjunction with the Australian Bicentennial Collection. The envelopes portray the people who sailed with the First Fleet.
Estimates of the total number of people who sailed aboard the eleven ships of the fleet vary widely. However, it is generally accepted now that there were about 1350 people in total, of whom 700 were convicts. The remainder of the complement compromised of civilians, marines and sailors.
The four envelopes honour these groups.
The four envelopes will remain on sale until 30 December 1988, making them current throughout the Bicentennial year.
