Comparatively little is known of the civilians who sailed with the First Fleet. In the main they were the wives and children of the marines, and about twenty-four children of convicts. Others, like Arthur Bowes Smyth were surgeons; there was the chaplain, Richard Johnson, with his wife Mary; plus assorted officials. The envelope portrays the Reverend Johnson in front of a painting by Bradley of the Fleet at Teneriffe. Superimposed is an extract from Marine Sergeant James Scott’s journal, recording the birth of his daughter. Deputy Judge Advocate, David Collins appears in the stamp area.
