A Corps of Marines (naval soldiers) was raised to sail with the First Fleet. Their duties were to guard the convicts and to provide the defence of the New South Wales settlement. Several marines kept diaries throughout the voyage; the most informative of which are the diaries kept by Marine Captain Watkin Tench, Marine Sergeant James Scott and marines Ralph Clark and John Easty. An extract from Watkin Tench’s journal, noting his disappointment with the ladies of Rio de Janeiro is superimposed over a Bradley painting of the Fleet at Rio de Janeiro. Marine Captain Watkin Tench features in the stamp area.
