Australia Philately: 1987 The First Fleet: Teneriffe June 1787 (Maximum Cards)

On 3 June 1787, three weeks after leaving England, the First Fleet arrived at Teneriffe in the Canary Islands. Supplies of fresh water and vegetables were ferried to the ships while the Fleet’s senior officers enjoyed the hospitality of the Spanish Governor. One of the highlights of the stay was the celebration of the Festival of Corpus Christi, a religious procession involving most of the city’s population. One of the convicts found an opportunity to escape, but his freedom was short-lived. He was found asleep on the beach the next morning and taken back into custody. The Fleet set sail for Rio de Janeiro, its next port of call, on 10 June.
