The original Wollongong post office was constructed in 1882.
On 23 September 1968, a new building was officially opened by Postmaster-General Alan Hulme as the Wollongong Post Office and Telephone Exchange. The new building cost $1,226,400.
Wollongong Central post office in Piccadilly Centre closed at noon on Saturday, 21 September 1968 and was not re-opened. The older Wollongong site became the Wollongong East post office.
