The Melbourne Philatelic Bureau was opened on Monday, 30 March 1953 in the Postal Hall of the General Post Office (G.P.O.) on Spencer Street. The bureau was opened to provide a counter and mail service for Australian philatelists and overseas orders. The service was opened from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to noon on Saturday.
During the mid-1960s, the bureau appears to have also occupied the 1st Floor of 654-664 Bourke Street. By 1970 the bureau had moved to the 12th Floor of the new Cromwell Building on 374 Bourke Street.
