The Canberra City post office was located on the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street. In April 1957 a building formerly occupied by Australian National Airways was purchased as an extension to the post office.
A special philatelic sales service began on 3 February 1960 with the introduction of 1/6d Christmas Bells stamp. Initially, the counter only operated on first days of issue of new stamps.
The office closed on 12 April 1984 being replaced by Canberra G.P.O.
