Australia Philately: Darwin (5790)

The Darwin post office on Smith and Knuckey Street was constructed by A L M Maddalozzo Ltd at a cost of £205,000. The original post office was destroyed during the Japanese air raid on 19 February 1942. Work commenced on the new, three-storey, air-conditioned building in 1959. It was completed in 1960.

The building contained a memorial to the ten postal workers who lost their lives during the 1942 bombings. The postal workers were the first Australians killed on Australian soil by the Japanese.

1967

Darwin opened a Philatelic Sales Section on 5 April 1967.
