The Perth General Post Office was officially opened on 26 September 1923 after around nine years of protracted construction, at a total cost of £400,000.
1953
A Philatelic Section was opened in April 1953. The section provided counter service for philatelists and handled mail orders within Western Australia.
The section was opened on Wednesday and the day of issue for new postage stamps. In March 1955, the section had proved so popular, that it began operating daily from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

A First Day of Issue postmarker was introduced on 5 November 1958.

1977
The Philatelic Sales Centre, originally located in the centre of the G.P.O., was expanded and relocated to a special room on the southern side of the G.P.O. It commenced operations on 17 August 1977 and a special pictorial, and a new first day of issue, postmarker was introduced. Both incorporated a line illustration of the emblem of Western Australia – the Black Swan (Cygnus atratus).
