Australia Philately: Philatelic Bureau – Melbourne (3000)

The Melbourne Philatelic Bureau originally formed part of the Melbourne G.P.O. located on Spencer Street.

1953

The Melbourne Philatelic Bureau was opened on Monday, 30 March 1953 in the Postal Hall of the General Post Office (G.P.O.) on Spencer Street. The bureau was opened to provide a counter and mail service for Australian philatelists and overseas orders. The service was opened from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to noon on Saturday.

1958

A First Day of Issue postmarker was introduced on 5 November 1958.

1963

On 21 October 1963 philatelic facilities previously available at the Philatelic Bureau, G.P.O., Spencer Street were moved to the Russell Street post office.

Counter services at the bureau were discontinued but they bureau continued to manage mail orders from the 1st Floor of 654-664 Bourke Street.

1970

By 1970 the bureau had moved to the 12th Floor of the new Cromwell Building on 374 Bourke Street.

A new first day of issue postmarker was introduced on 31 August 1970.
