Philatelic sales went under a number of different names from 1966 until 1979:

As at the beginning of 1980, Australia Post had catergorised their philatelic sales network into three different types of facilities for the philatelist:

- Australian Philatelic Sales Centres
- First Day of Issue Postmarking Offices
Philatelic Sales Centres
Philatelic sales centres allowed collectors to purchase philatelic items over the counter rather than by mail. As well as Australian items, the sales centres sold items for Australian Antarctic Territory, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, Fiji, Nauru, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea and Western Samoa:

- Australia – stamps, first day covers, souvenir stamp packs, postal stationery and philatelic handbooks.
- Australian Antarctic Territory and Cocos (Keeling) Islands – stamps and souvenir stamp packs.
- Christmas Island, Fiji, Nauru, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea and Western Samoa – stamps, postal stationery and souvenir packs.
Limited Philatelic Sales Centres
Limited Philatelic Sales Centres sold Australian Antarctic Territory and Cocos (Keeling) Islands philatelic items.
Australian Philatelic Sales Centres
Post offices with this facility carried the full range of Australian and Australian Anatarctic Territory stamps and stationery as well as provided first day of issue postmarking facilities.
