Australia Philately: Philatelic Section

In January 1953, the Postmaster-General’s Department announced arrangements for dealing with philatelic matters and requests from overseas and local collectors, as well as dealers, were to be improved.

After an overseas visit by the Postmaster General, where he was “greatly impressed” by the services of international post services when dealing with stamp collectors, he announced the formation of Philatelic Sections in the General Post Office (G.P.O.) in each state. Each G.P.O. would handle local requests, with the Melbourne section also handling requests from overseas countries.

The plans also provided for a first day cover service, particularly for overseas collectors.
