The Balmoral Club was originally constructed by British aircraft engineer and MP Sir Oliver Simmonds, who moved to the Bahamas in 1948. In those days it was an exclusive hotel, sometimes dubbed the Immoral Club and was located on Cable Beach.
The hotel had its own island for guests and also a tortoise from the Galapagos Islands called Columbus – the longest resident at the club. The most famous guests included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
In 1963, the club was taken over by the Hotels Corporation of America and became Balmoral Club (HCA).
