Bahamas Philately: El Casino

In 1955 the wealthy American shipbuilder and international industrialist, Daniel K Ludwig, moved to Grand Bahama to finance and dredge a deep water harbour. He went on to build the King’s Inn Hotel and golf course and eventually decided to construct an International Bazaar and and adjacent casino and.

El Casino was the second casino constructed in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Construction began on the Moorish-inspired casino in c.1962 and was opened 31 December 1963. The main casino was decorated in rich panels of gold, royal red and avocado with a rich Persian-style rug covering the floor. Blackjack, dice and roulette were the principal games offered.

Gold mesh curtains separated the main casino floor from the el Morocco restaurant, where waiters wore North African garb. The restaurant walls were covered in gold damask with clusters of chandeliers lighting the room for up to 125 guest. Next to el Morocco was the el Kasbar Show Lounge which provided shows every evening.

The casino became a mecca for high-rolling American gamblers and Las Vegas showgirls. All gambling fell under strict government control with local residents forbidden to patronise the casinos.
