Bahamas Philately: Fish of The Bahamas – Grouper

The Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus) is one of the large number of perciform fishes in the family Serranidae commonly referred to as groupers. It is the most important of the groupers for commercial fishery in the West Indies.

The Bahamas have the largest population of Nassau groupers in the Caribbean. At up to 4 feet long and 50 pounds, the Nassau grouper was one of the most important food fishes throughout the Caribbean and West Indies.

Due to how it reproduces, the spawning behaviour makes the species vulnerable to overfishing. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the Nassau grouper as critically endangered, due to commercial and recreational fishing and reef destruction.
