In 1948, Sir Billy Butlin decided to expand his Butlin’s Holiday Camps to West End, Grand Bahama Island, by building Butlin’s Vacation Village. This venture only lasted a couple of years. The 68 acre property sat dormant until the opening of the Grand Bahama Club in 1951 by the Sammons family of Dallas, Texas.
In 1959, the Grand Bahama Club fell under the new management of the Jack Tar hotel chain and became the Grand Bahama Club (A Jack Tar Hotel).
