Lowes Paradise Island Hotel & Villas, located on Paradise Island, was opened in December of 1967. It was owned by Resorts International and operated by the Lowes chain. It provided 500 air-conditioned rooms including villas. The hotel offered the Imperial Dining Room, Laguna Terrace, Trade Winds Bar & Lounge, Gazebo Coffee House, the Thatched Hut and championship tennis courts – all adjacent to the casino.
Construction of the hotel began in 1966. The complex was originally designed to be a nine storey, 423 room hotel overlooking Nassau harbour, costing $10million. The hotel was to be part of a complex that included villas, a convention facilities, a ballroom for 2000, plus a swimming pool, tennis courts and a golf course.
On 1 January 1982, Resorts International assumed operation of the hotel under an agreement signed by Island Hotel Company Ltd, a Bahamian subsidiary of Resorts International Inc. It became known as Resorts International’s Paradise Island Hotel.
