Lum’s was located on Bay Street, Nassau. Lum’s was a food chain that was based on Miami, Florida. The business was originally started in 1956 when Stuart and Clifford Perlman purchased a Miami Beach hot dog stand from Burnett Carvin. At its height, the company owned and franchised 400 stores in the continental US, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Europe.
The food operations of Lum’s, Inc. were sold in 1971 to John Y. Brown, chairman of Kentucky Fried Chicken, along with a group of investors. In 1978, Austrian restaurant magnate Friedrich Jahn purchased Lums, along with the International House of Pancakes. By 1982, the chain had filed for bankruptcy.
