As the popularity of recreational boating grew after WWII, so did the demand for docks. The Nassau Yacht Haven opened on 1 May 1949 at a cost of $100,000. It was owned and operated by Robert H Symonette.
The original building, which housed the Poop Deck Restaurant, was originally used as an air plane hanger in Oakes Field. The club house provided four apartments, a lounge, showers and dressing rooms, lockers, mail, laundry, ice and fueling service, as well as telephones for world-wide communication. There was also a showroom, salesroom, office, utilities and service room.
The large U-shaped berth could accommodate up to 100 yachts with over 1200ft of dockage space, and new docks were added annually. The dock could accommodate boats with an eight-foot draft.
