The Oceanus Hotel, Freeport, was opened in December 1965. It was originally named the Oceanus Inn but the name was changed just before it opened. The hotel hosted 168 rooms divided into 10 three-bedroom suites, 30 two-bedroom suites and 60 one-bedroom units.
The hotel’s dining rooms, including the Coral Terrace Dining Room, served American, European and Bahamian cuisines. It provided nightly entertainment and dancing, while there were live shows in The Pirate’s Den Night Club (Tropicana Night Club). It had an Olympic-sized swimming pool, docking facilities, and also provided access to deep sea fishing and golf facilities.
Scuba diving was provided by the International Underwater Explorer’s Club. The club was designed to establish a world headquarters for scuba and skin diving enthusiasts. It had is own building adjacent to the hotel.
In 1967 an additional building was added to the hotel and it became known as Hotels Oceanus.
