MS Song of Norway was one of the first ships purpose-built as a cruise ship. The vessel was constructed in Helsinki, Finland in 1970. Named Song of Norway, she was the first ship built for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. The vessel originally had a gross tonnage of 18,000 tons, and could carry 724 passengers.
In 1978, due to the high demand for cruising, the ship was refit. She was also lengthened to provide for 1024 passengers and increasing her size to 23,000 gross tons. This was accomplished via the insertion of an 85-foot (26 m) section to the vessel’s severed centre.
