Spanish and other European colonizers introduced coconuts to the Caribbean region during the first half of the 16th century. Coconuts in the Caribbean region originate from the Indian Ocean, near India.
Coconut trees are grown all over Dominica. During the 1960’s there were several large plantations on the island. The coconut was converted to copra which formed one of the main items of inter-island exports for the manufacture of fats and oils.
