Malawi Philately: 1972 Christmas – 3t Adoration of the Kings – Orcagna

Florentine art in the later 14th century was dominated by the work of Andrea di Cione (known as Orcagna), who was active as painter, sculptor and architect from about 1343. He was assisted by his brothers, Matteo (a stone-mason), Nardo and Jacopo.

The image taken from the upper tier panel of a large, four-tiered altarpiece created for the high altar of the choir of the church of San Pier Maggiore in Florence. The altarpiece was most probably commissioned by the wealthy Florentine Albizzi family.
