Malawi Philately: 1974 35th Anniversary of Malawi Angling Society – 30t Tigerfish

Tigerfish can refer to fish from various families, and derives from official and colloquial associations of these with the tiger (Panthera tigris). However, the primary species designated by the name “tigerfish” are African and belong to the family Alestidae. The variety found in Malawi are significantly smaller. They can be found in the Majete Wildlife Reserve, especially below Kapichira Falls.

The tigerfish gets its name from its sharp tiger-like teeth. The lake tigerfish (Rhamphochromis longiceps) are silvery with a dark line along their sides. They are sometimes compared to piranha due to their pointy intimidating teeth and aggressive behavior.
