Disa welwitschii is named after the Austrian botanist, Friedrich Martin Welwitsch (1806-1872).
Disa welwitschii is a descendant of the asparagus plant and was first described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach. It belongs to the genus Disa , and family Orchidaceae. The flowers are bright orange-red to carmine.
