M.V. Mpasa was built as a passenger and cargo vessel by Harland and Wolff Ltd., Belfast in 1934 and was launched in Chipoka in December 1935. In 1966 the vessel was modified to carry cargo only, having a capacity for 27,000 gallons of fuel and 60 tons of dry cargo.
