On 21 January 1979 Malawi celebrated National Tree Planting Day. One thousand five hundred schools participated in the National Tree Planting Day Ceremony, with approximately 400 hectares of trees being planted . Throughout the year the Forestry Extension Unit also continued with the programme of general forestry education through such media as radio broadcast, newspaper articles and film shows.
