Malawi Philately: 1979 National Tree Planting Day – 20t Mlombwa

Pterocarpus angolensis (known locally as Mlombwa or African Teak) is a species of Pterocarpus native to southern Africa. It usually grows from 5 to 20 metres tall. Trees growing on good sites in full light can live for up to 100 years.

It is a deciduous tree usually growing to 16 m tall, with dark brown bark and a high, wide-crowned canopy of shiny compound leaves. In favoured wetter locations the trees are typically about 18–19 m tall. The leaves appear at the time of the flowers or shortly afterwards. It produces an abundance of scented, orange-yellow flowers in the spring. In southern Africa, this is usually just at the end of the dry season, often about mid-October.

The tree is a key timber species throughout its range, yielding a high quality wood.
