Malawi Philately: 1979 Wild Orchids Definitive – 1.50k Polystachya dendrobiiflora

Polystachya dendrobiiflora is found growing on shrubs in the montane grasslands of Burundi, Congo, Zaire, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe at elevations of 400 to 2150 meters.

Polystachya dendrobiiflora is a species with relatively large flowers on a straw-like stem, normally flowering before the leaves appear. Flowers showy, opening wide, shell-pink to mauve-pink, sometimes almost white, sometimes with red or lilac spots on the lip.  This is an unusual species within the genus, in that it often grows as a terrestrial in shallow sandy soil.
