Disa ornithantha is found in Zaire, Tanzania, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is believed the plant was named after Queen Disa who occurs in a Swedish legendary saga.
The orchid is found in woodlands and wet montane grasslands at elevations of 1000 to 2000 meters.
