Malawi Philately: Mount Soche Hotel

Mount Soche Hotel was located in Blantyre and was opened on 1 February 1969. It was officially opened by President Kuanda on 19 April 1969.  It was built by Malawi Hotels Limited at a cost of £500,000 and had a capacity of 100 rooms. It was Malawi’s first International Standard hotel offering modern ammenities and was managed by Hallways Hotels (Overseas) Ltd.

In addition, Malawi Hotels Ltd constantly made renovations to the hotels they acquired, including alterations to public rooms to provide additional amenities in the Mount Soche Hotel as well as installation of a radio network.

An extension of 50 twin-bedded rooms was completed in July 1979 at a cost of K1.3m, bringing to total capacity to 148 rooms.
