PTS and STAMPEX: Line Engraved stamps of Great Britain 1840-1880

Leading collector/exhibitor/dealer Bill Barrell and leading expert/collector on these issues Mike Williams will be chatting about this classic British issue, and in particular the 1d black and 1d red, although the principles discussed can be applied to all line engraved stamps.

Bill will be looking at the printing process, the issue of the 1d black, many aspects of the 1d red using a slide audio presentation, illustrating items from his International Gold medal exhibit, with many rare and unusual items, including the ‘Burrus’ 1d black first day usage.

Mike, using a similar presentation will discuss several more in depth aspects including the importance of plate ’tilt’ in the plating process, as well as methods of distinguishing the pale rose shades of 1857 from those of 1861-4 and a much easier and unheralded way to distinguish between the two dies.
