Rhodesia & Nyasaland Philately: Bulawayo

“Bulawayo attained municipality status in 1897, and city status in 1943.

Bulawayo, the second largest city in Rhodesia with a population of 137,000, is situated astride the main road, rail and air link between South and Central Africa.

It is especially favoured by its geographical position as an industrial, commercial and tourist centre and makes an ideal base for touring holidays. It is the headquarters or Rhodesia Railways. It is within an hour’s drive of the Matopo Hills, which provide the resting place of Cecil John Rhodes, are famous for their Bushrnan paintings and have a fine game park. Tourists pass through the city to Wankie National Park and the Victoria Falls.” – Rhodesian Commentary Vol 20, 1966
