Rhodesia & Nyasaland Philately: U.K. Trade Commission (Salisbury)

The U.K.Trade Commission was originally located in the Sanlam Building in Baker Avenue, Salisbury. A second office was located in Bulawayo but this was closed 31 December 1958 after a review of the operations in Southern Rhodesia. It appears that once the Bulawayo operations were closed, the commission moved into the R.T.A. (Rhodesia Tobacco Association) House at 95 Baker Avenue.

The trade commission consisted of official representatives of the British government based in Commonwealth countries and colonies. They were tasked with promoting British trade interests, fostering economic ties, and supporting British businesses in those regions.

In 1954 Trade Commissioner was H W Woodruff who was replaced by John W Stoodley. Stoodley remained as Trade Commissioner until 1960 when he took up office in Melbourne, Australia. He was replaced by George William Brazendale.
