The 15 cent stamp is a photograph of a thin section of granite as seen in plane polarized light through a petrological microscope. A thin slice of the rock initially cut by a diamond impregnated saw blade has subsequently been ground to a thickness of about 0.03 mm and is attached to a glass microscope slide. The section is magnified 20 times and shows a flake of brightly coloured muscovite mica in an aggregate of finer grained quartz and feldspar.
