Rhodesia Philately: Wankie National Park

Wankie National Park was declared a game reserve in September 1928 and became a national park under the National Park Act of 1949. It lies in the northwest of Rhodesia, just off the main road between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.

Wankie was home to the world’s largest elephant herd, many of whom migrated from Botswana in the dry season. It was also noted for the large herds of buffalo and some of the last remaining Sable antelopes. Over fifty species of game inhabited the park.
