Southern Rhodesia Philately: Remington Typewriter Agency

The Remington Typewriter Agency was located in Hepworth’s Buildings, Eight Avenue, Bulawayo.

The Remington Type Agency was established in 1898 in South Africa by John Garlick. The business was owned by Garlick Ltd., a private company of whom all the shareholders were members of the Garlick family.

In 1910, the Remington Typewriter Company occupied a new salesroom in Bulawayo and the Bulawayo Chronicle became the new Remington representative. In 1911, the business moved to No.4 Sauer’s Chambers.

In 1939, the the Remington Typewriter Agency changed its name to Garlicks Office Equipment Co (Remington Typewriter Agency). This was due to the perception the company had a direct connection to the Remington Typewriter Company and an American concern.
