Southern Rhodesia Philately: Rhodesian Musical and Electrical Industries Ltd (Bulawayo)

Rhodesian Musical and Electrical Industries Ltd were radio and sound specialists that traded under the name Mark Friend Radio Co. The business appears as early as 1934 as Mark Friend with the original branch of the business located in Bulawayo and later expanding to Salisbury. The business was owned by Marcus (Mark) Friend.

It appears the company was a Rhodesian subsidiary of Electric and Musical Industries Limited (also known as EMI) – a British company formed in 1931 from the merger of the Gramophone Company and the Columbia Graphophone Company. Under EMI, the Gramophone Company continued as a record label, and His Master’s Voice continuing as a sub-label.
