Turks and Caicos Islands Philately: 1967 Definitive Series – 1½d Boat Building

The Turks & Caicos Islands have a long history of boat-building—combining the use of native materials, plans created in the minds of the local builder, and lots of hard work and ingenuity. The end result is the colourful island sloops unique to the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Back in the day when the majority of livings were eked out of fishing and farming, wooden sloops were a valuable commodity. Men would spend days or weeks out at sea catching stock and voyaging around the region to sell their wares.

However, by the late 1960s with the onset of the development boom, power boats began to replace their slow, outdated counterparts. Fishermen swapped the seas and their often hostile conditions for the chance to make a ‘dry dollar’ on land doing carpentry and the like.
