Zambia Philately: 1964 Independence First Definitive Issue – 1d Health

The modern health sector in Zambia was relatively limited at independence in 1964. From the late 1960s onwards the sector saw rapid expansion, as the new Government vigorously increased its expenditures on the health sector.

In the years following independence, considerable investment was made in the hospital system, which included a number of general hospitals in the main towns, many smaller hospitals (some of which were mission-run), and rural health centres.

By the mid-1970s, fiscal constraints became significant and investment in healthcare was reduced.
