During the Independence Ceremony in Lusaka on 24th October, 1964, the President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. Kuanda, said: “The task before us in building our new nation is formidable and I shall need the support of you, the people of Zambia, if I am to succeed.” The People of Zambia, from the highest civil servant to the humble subsistence farmer, have answered this appeal whole-heartedly and in the first year of independence the country has made great progress.
Inspired by the Government’s dynamic £35 million 18-month transactional development plan, self-help has been the slogan of all Zambians. In the rural areas people have built schools, roads and bridges and the hundreds of young men in the Youth Service camps have worked on similar projects.
But perhaps the most enthusiastic self-help project has been the man-in-the-street fund raising campaign for the University of Zambia, which will open in 1966. In the first six months of the fund’s existence more than £60,000 was donated. This was in addition to the £285,000 given by the big business firms.
Zambia needs, and appreciates, the aid it is receiving from more developed countries. The Government is using this aid to improve conditions in the rural areas, to increase education and health facilities, and better the standard of living of every Zambian.
Development is a slow progress but in Zambia, with its stable Government, its copper wealth and its hardworking people, this process is explorable.
