Zambia Philately: 1965 1st Anniversary of Independence – 6d Independence Stadium

Independence Stadium was opened in 1964 in Lusaka, Zambia. On midnight of 23 October 1964, the stadium was host to Independence celebrations where the green, red, orange and black flag with a fish eagle, designed by Gabriel Ellison, was hoisted at 12.01am on 24 October 1964 to the national anthem of Zambia.

Premier Kenneth David Kaunda was present, clad in a special Kente cloth toga, a gift from his fellow freedom fighter, the late Ghanaian president Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
