Zambia Youth Service was established in 1964 as an outlet for large numbers of untrained youth, both boys and girls, who had complete part or all of primary school. The initial period of establishment was largely experimental in nature until 1965 when the service’s objectives became more defined.
Skill camps were established at Kabwe and Kitwe; farm training camps at Katete, Choma, Kitwe Farm and Solwezi; domestic science camps at Chingola and Lunzuwa; an induction centre at Kafue; and a poultry farm at Ndola. All the camps were aimed at agricultural self-sufficiency. In addition to these services, an academic programme was provided for illiterates.
After going through the service, many of the participants joined the mining, police, army, education, administration. building, industry and agriculture sectors.
