Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) was an important crop in Zambia during the 1960s-1970s, especially as an export to Europe. The crop was valued for soil improvement in cereal-based cropping systems, for improving the livelihoods of farming households who consume it and also sell it for cash, and for earning foreign exchange when exported.
However, concerns over aflatoxins and low quality lead to the industry’s demise.
