In 1974, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 26 August as Namibia Day. The day commemorates the Namibian War of Independence which began on 26 August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe. It was the culmination of decades of difficult interactions between the UN, Namibia and South Africa over the status of the South-West Africa territory.
