Kafue National Park was founded in the 1920s as the Kafue Game Reserve. The park is named for the Kafue River.
In 1950 it was formally established as a national park by Norman Carr, an influential British-Rhodesian conservationist. It was the first National Park of the territory and one of the largest in Africa.
The park was recognised as one of the most prolific game areas in Central Africa and was seen as a source of tourism for economic benefit.
