On 1 January 1970, the Open Air Museum was taken over by the Department of Cultural Services and re-named the Maramba Cultural Centre.
The museum was established to preserve the arts and crafts of old Zambia. The museum contained typical dwellings from the main regions of Zambia where craftsmen worked in the traditional manner as blacksmiths, wood carvers and mask carvers. There were also traditional dances performed for visitors.
