Zambia Philately: Rhokana Corporation Ltd

Rhokana Corporation Ltd was registered in London on 16 February 1923 as Rhodesian Congo Border Concessions Ltd. The name was changed to Rhokana Corporation in March 1931.

Control was transferred to Northern Rhodesia on 1 January 1951 and it was re-incorporated on 11 May 1954 under the Rhoanglo Group Act 1953. The corporation held mineral rights covering 52 square miles in the Nkana area and 54 square miles in the Bwana Mkubwa area near Ndola. The corporation had mines and plants at Nkana.

In November 1969, an agreement was reached between the Zambia Government and mine owners. The agreement saw the Industrial Development Corporation (INDECO) acquire 51 per cent of the shares of mining companies.  Two new Zambian based companies were formed into which all the mining companies would be consolidated. Nchanga Consolidated Mines Ltd was created for mines under the Anglo-American Group. Rhokana Corporation Ltd and Rhokana Copper Refineries Ltd became part of the Nchanga group.
