The Sumbu Game Reserve, located on the south-western shores of Lake Tanganyika, was created in 1942. Within the reserve was Kasaba Bay. The reserve was one of the smaller animal sanctuaries, holding a number of elephant, hippo and antelope.
In 1971 it became Sumbu National Park.
